This is a 24×52 desk, with 28-inch legs from the Hairpin Leg Co; the black walnut from Alderfer as usual. You can see pictures of the process here. The entire process followed lessons from Blacktail Studio’s epoxy workshop.
After waiting for two weeks for the epoxy to cure, we took the desktop over to Dave Lentz to use his CNC machine and for other general woodworking guidance. The desk is finished as usual with Rubio Monocoat, and will now go in one of the kids’ bedrooms. Cost breakdown for the curious follows the images.

So, in case you’re wondering, here’s the breakdown on costs:
Walnut slab: $150
Epoxy: $160
CNC machine time: $150
Legs: $100
Melamine board for mold: $60
… so basically $610, plus another $50 or so in materials (sandpaper, finish, wear on blades, caulk, etc.). Plus of course the amortized costs of all the tools I used, and then my time, which probably ran to 50-60 hours. No wonder people charge $5,000 for work like this.
